Why Medi Ink Technologies exists

Medi Ink Technologies™ grew out of nearly a decade of clinical practice — thousands of patient encounters across New York, New Jersey, Virginia, and West Virginia, working alongside reconstructive surgeons including ARSA-network practices such as NYBRA Plastic Surgery and The Plastic Surgery Center.

That experience revealed a pattern larger than any single case: restorative tattooing is often the final step of reconstruction after breast cancer, burns, trauma, or congenital conditions — a permanent procedure with profound emotional weight — yet the specialty has no standardized clinical infrastructure. Lighting environments alter color perception with no way to measure them. Pigments behave unpredictably with no structured knowledge base to warn practitioners. Healed outcomes are remembered, not documented.

Medi Ink Technologies was founded to change that — not to build software for its own sake, but to preserve clinical expertise, reduce unnecessary variability, and improve post-surgical patient outcomes through better-informed permanent decisions.

The Framework

What we mean by clinical intelligence

Clinical intelligence is the integration of practitioner expertise, standardized assessment, structured documentation, objective observation, and emerging evidence — to support better permanent clinical decisions.

A deliberate distinction: artificial intelligence may eventually contribute to clinical intelligence, but it is not the definition of it. The clinician always makes the final treatment decision. And we describe our work as evidence-informed — not evidence-based — because the field does not yet have the standardized outcomes data to justify the stronger claim. Our research program exists to begin building it.

The principle behind everything we do: today’s clinical experience can become tomorrow’s clinical evidence.

Standardized assessment & documentation

Digital intake, consent, standardized clinical photography, anatomical mapping, and structured treatment planning — designed for multilingual patient-facing content.

Objective environmental tools

Assessment of lighting conditions and image capture — addressing a documented source of variability in pigment selection.

Structured pigment knowledge

A pigment and outcomes knowledge base built from safety data, colorant information, and healed clinical results.

Longitudinal healing documentation

Objective healed-result comparisons over time, supporting quality improvement and future research.

The Research Program

What we are studying

Our current research focus asks a disciplined feasibility question: can objective environmental and clinical assessment improve consistency in restorative tattoo planning? The program includes structured clinical workflow research with practitioners and reconstructive surgeons, standardized capture and color-calibration methodology, measurement of consistency and repeatability across practitioners, and the establishment of a multidisciplinary clinical advisory board spanning reconstructive surgery, dermatology, imaging science, oncology nursing, biostatistics, and patient advocacy.

Findings will be prepared for publication and shared with the reconstructive care community, consistent with our mission of building the specialty’s evidence base.
